We've to Szechuan House at Cambie and 19th a bunch of times now, since we live in the neighbourhood. The food is in a much more authentic Sichuan style than is common in Vancouver (more often a sort of Canadian-Cantonese-Sichuanese hybrid). We have had excellent success on each visit. In true Sichuan form, the dishes are very spicy and "ma la"... so it is wise to order a mild dish or two to balance out the spicy ones. They have a great water boiled fish (suizhuyu). This is a large bowl of fresh, very tender white fish and bean sprouts brought to the table in a still-boiling water-and-oil broth. The bowl is filled to the top with roasted chili peppers, which are removed at the table after imparting their flavour to the dish. This is probably a house specialty, as it came in two sizes and was discounted one day a week. The braised eggplant is mild and tasty and not too greasy. A much subtler dish is "crab flavoured tofu" (xiehuang doufu). This was interesting and mild, and a nice counterpoint to the strongly flavoured dishes. Any dish with their pickled chili peppers (offered in beef, rabbit, or duck tongue, among others) is extremely yummy. One slight miscue was a chicken dish with aged bamboo shoots. This dish was a bit of an acquired taste, and was not as successful as other dishes we ordered. The interior of the restaurant is basic, functional, and clean. This is a classic plastic table cloth sort of establishment. Service is efficient, and comfortable with english-speaking customers. The exterior of the restaurant could be a bit more inviting to walk-in traffic. But don't let that put you off. Go on in, the proprietor is friendly, and the food is really tasty. (And rare in the area.)
